As part of The Somerset Toiletry Co.’s continued commitment to sustainability, we are making subtle changes to our two core brands this year, AAA & Naturally European. Our fabulous formulations will remain the same, but a few packaging changes will be implemented to reduce our environmental impact.
AAA switches to white recycled plastic
We are removing black plastic from our famously floral AAA collection and opting for white plastic made from recycled materials (PCR). This contemporary update will ensure packaging can be easily recycled after use. Black plastic and combinations of materials like aluminium can be challenging to recycle hence the reason for our change. The illustrations found on AAA products have also been updated to bring a sense of freshness to the range.
Black plastic caps and pumps will be replaced in our AAA hand wash and shower gel with clear recycled plastic, and hand and body cream silver tubes will be switched to white recycled plastic. Our illustrations across the collection have been refreshed, and we love the contemporary new vibe.
The benefits of recycled plastic (PCR):
Conservation of Resources: Recycling plastic reduces the need for virgin plastic production, which conserves valuable natural resources such as petroleum and natural gas. By using recycled plastic, we can extend the lifespan of these resources and reduce the extraction and processing associated with virgin plastic production.
Energy Savings: The process of recycling plastic generally requires less energy compared to producing plastic from scratch. Recycling plastic involves melting and reprocessing the material, which typically requires less energy than the energy-intensive processes involved in creating new plastic.
Reduced Landfill Waste: Plastics are a significant contributor to landfill waste. By recycling plastic, we divert it from landfills, reducing the amount of plastic waste that accumulates and the associated environmental impact. This helps alleviate landfill space issues and prevents plastic from releasing harmful substances as it breaks down over time.
Decreased Pollution: Improperly discarded plastic can pollute ecosystems, including bodies of water, where it poses risks to marine life. Recycling plastic helps mitigate this pollution by reducing the demand for new plastic production and the associated pollution from manufacturing processes.
Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Recycling plastic can help lower greenhouse gas emissions. The production of plastic from raw materials releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. By recycling plastic instead of producing new plastic, we reduce the overall emissions associated with the plastic manufacturing process.
Promoting the Circular Economy: Recycling plastic contributes to the concept of a circular economy, where materials are recycled and reused rather than disposed of after a single use. By incorporating recycled plastic into new products, we close the loop, reducing the reliance on new plastic production and promoting a more sustainable approach to resource management.
Naturally European moves to Kraft
Naturally European outer packaging will move from coated cardboard to unbleached kraft. Unbleached kraft is easier than coated cardboard to recycle and entirely biodegradable. We believe this rustic, natural new look lends itself to Naturally European’s contemporary aesthetic whilst being an environmentally friendly alternative.
Room Diffusers, candles, hand cream and gift sets presentation boxes will be moving to kraft card, and our paper-wrapped soaps will have a revamped design.
The benefits of recycled plastic (PCR):
Biodegradable and Compostable: Kraft paper is biodegradable and easily breaks down in natural environments. It is also suitable for composting, which means it can be returned to the soil without causing harm or pollution.
Lower Carbon Footprint: Kraft packaging generally has a lower carbon footprint compared to other packaging materials, such as plastic or metal. The production process of kraft paper involves less energy consumption and generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
We anticipate this to be a gradual transition as we work through existing stock. However, we believe this is the right direction for our business, in light of our sustainable ambitions and feedback from environmentally minded customers. Small changes make a big difference overall, so thank you for continuing to support our journey.
