Ever wondered why we celebrate Halloween? Beyond costumes and sweets, Halloween has centuries of history woven into its cobwebs — from ancient rituals to modern-day revelry.
Where It All Began
Over 2,000 years ago, the Celts celebrated Samhain on October 31st marking the end of harvest and the start of winter. It was believed that on this night, the veil between the living and the dead grew thin, letting spirits roam the earth. To protect themselves, people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off wandering ghosts. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III established 'All Saints' Day' on November 1st, to honour saints and martyrs. The night before became All Hallows' Eve eventually shortened to Halloween.
Halloween Today
By the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in America, Halloween had transformed into a light-hearted, family-friendly holiday filled with trick-or-treating, costumes, jack-o’-lanterns, and spooky tales. Today, Halloween is a celebration for the whole family, where kids dress up to go trick or treating and adults dive headfirst into themed décor.
