We are all familiar with the term self-care. But do we know what self-care is? Self-care is not just caring for ourselves at a surface level, as it also includes caring for one’s mental, physiological, and spiritual wellbeing.

How do you start a self-care routine?

Once you have worked out some self-care ideas, it’s time to divide them into a daily self-care routine, a weekly self-care routine, and monthly. Heading off to a swanky retreat or spa might be an ideal way to look after yourself, but it comes with a catch and is also pretty impossible at the moment on lockdown. Not forgetting it will also cost you an arm and a leg.

So, use that beautiful and smart mind of yours to get creative and devise a bespoke self-care plan, or read our blog Easy Weekday Self-care.

What is environmental self-care?

Environmental or sustainable self -care is self care that considers your impact on the environment. It is used to describe a self care plan that reduces waste, sourced product sustainably, and generally reduces your carbon footprint wherever possible.

Sustainable self-care and the use of sustainable beauty products is a simple way to do your bit! It can be hard sometimes to know where to start when we want to be more eco-friendly, but the great news is that sustainable self-care is one of the easiest ways to start.

You can also consider cruelty-free body care brands with ethical views, for instance. You can read more about our company story and ethos here.

It is possible to be mindful of the environment and your surroundings whilst caring for yourself. Supporting local enterprises where you can and businesses that are committed to becoming more sustainable is another simple way you can think and act sustainably.

Steps to Sustainable self-care

Sustainable self-care is a tried and tested idea, and only involves simple lifestyle choices and decisions to ensure you are doing your bit. Let’s go through some ideas that might help you with your daily and weekly self-care routine with sustainable personal care products.

Have a good sleep routine

Although we all know the advice about getting plenty of sleep, many of us take it lightly. Having a good night’s sleep not only builds a strong foundation for a good day but also gives your body ample time to rejuvenate and rest. Aim for 7-9 hours per night if possible. Additionally, sleeping at the same time each day builds the habit and makes it easier for you to maintain it.

The best part of this self-care tip? It doesn’t involve any products, or extra cost. Just managing  your own routine!

Keep a positivity journal

Having positive energy is akin to a solid self-care routine. No one can be happy or energetic all the time. However, you can try to maintain a positive outlook when you count your blessings. Make it a habit to write down about things that you’re grateful for each day. Practising gratitude will make you more aware of your blessings rather than focusing on the negatives. This is a really simple way of keeping on top of your mental health without costing you the earth.

Eat organic and sustainably sourced food

Treating your body well will help you improve your physical outlook. As ‘You are what you eat’, ensure you are eating a varied diet of nutritional meals. A balanced diet will not only be good for your body, but it will also be beneficial for the planet. Say yes to plant and vegetable-based diets and meals. Even if you are a die-hard carnivore, it doesn’t hurt to change old habits.

Try something new; you may be pleasantly surprised! Try to aim for organic vegetables that have sustainably sourced, as you will be doing your bit for the environment, while also eating well and giving your body all the right nutrients.

Connect with nature

Although modern life has made travelling more manageable and comfortable, it has taken us away from nature. Make it a part of your self-care routine to go for a walk every day. Plan that long-distance call with your mother or best friend and do it while you walk outside. As a bonus, you will also get to be closer to both – nature and love. It is scientifically proven that spending time in nature reduces stress levels.

Sustainable Toiletries

A sustainable self-care routine is incomplete without a sustainable skincare routine, as they go hand-in-hand. The best sustainable skincare products will give your skin the care and nourishment it deserves while being environmentally friendly as well.

Treat your body to products blended using natural ingredients and which aren’t harmful to the environment. Also, consider packaging when purchasing eco-friendly skincare.

All our Naturally European Hand Washes are made from  BDP (Breakdown Plastic), it is a revolutionary ingredient added to plastic during manufacturing, to enhance biodegradation of the product after use.  Visit our sustainability page to find out about our commitment to packaging going forward.

Natural candles

Looking for eco-friendly candles?

Naturally European candles are made from soy wax, which is a natural ingredient, biodegradable and can be cleaned using soap and water. When you run out of Naturally European Candle, you can easily melt the remaining wax, wash it and repurpose it into a make-up brush pot or use it as a jewellery pot.

Another advantage of soy wax is that compared to other candle wax, it burns slower, so lasts longer (over 40 hours).

We all need a little pampering at the moment, so why not fully enjoy your bathroom, and treat yourself to some self-care goodies from the The Somerset Toiletry Company
