As the world comes together to fight COVID-19, many of us have found ourselves adjusting to a very different way of life. Although we are now all very aware of the importance of looking after our physical health, it’s important to acknowledge what effect social distancing may have on our mental health.

With this in mind, we have put together some tips for keeping on top of your mental health and wellbeing during these difficult times.

Keep a routine!

If like us you are used to working in a busy office environment, suddenly setting up office at home with cats for colleagues and a sofa desk, it is easy to fall out of routine and roll up for work in your pyjamas! Although it is tempting to lounge about all day, we would advise sticking to your normal routine as much as possible. We’re not suggesting you sit at home in a three piece suit, but a nice comfy outfit and a tidy desk will help you to get in the right mindset for work. That’s not to say you can’t talk about the office drama with your pets though – Nemo the goldfish said what?!

Get organised

What’s that chore you’ve been meaning to get to for a few months? Now is the time to clear that to-do-list. Whether it’s a case of organising your wardrobe or decluttering the kitchen cupboards, being productive is a good method to help you regain some control over your situation. The best thing about this is that it does not all need to be done in one go – if the task feels a bit daunting, take your time, there’s no rush!

Make self care a priority

In our usual day to day lives, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. Now that we find ourselves without many outside distractions, take this time to pamper yourself. Here at The Somerset Toiletry Company, it will come as no surprise that we are advocates of a luxurious bath! Light some candles, run a bath, fill it with your favourite products (salts, fizzers, soak – take your pick) and try to declutter your mind.

Unleash your inner Picasso

Being creative is a perfect outlet for energy. Whether you want to take up knitting or decide to pick up the old guitar gathering dust in the corner, learning a new skill is a great way to occupy your mind. With copious tutorials on youtube, you can turn your home into your own little studio space.

Exercise for your physical & mental health

Although we are now more limited, including daily exercise in your routine is still important to help get those vital endorphins. Following the UK Government’s latest advice, outdoor exercise is permitted once a day, providing that you keep at a distance from others and follow guidelines. Although it is great to get outdoors and into nature if possible, that does not mean that you cannot have an equally fulfilling work out at home. There are some great routines you can follow on youtube, which require little space and no special equipment.

Be sociable…virtually!

During social distancing and isolation, it is easy to become lonely. Thankfully, we are living in an age where being connected has never been more accessible. Facetime your loved ones, make use of social media and use the time to speak to the people you may not have seen as much as you’d like to due to the chaos of everyday life. We may be apart physically, but the world has never been so connected.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

Finally, and this is an important one – let yourself off the hook! If you don’t achieve as much as you want to some days, or you feel like other people are doing more with their time, do not beat yourself up about it. There is already a lot to contend with, so do not put extra pressure on yourself.

From all at The Somerset Toiletry Company, we hope you are keeping safe and looking after yourselves! x
